Job description
I’m a solo developer making a Game Boy Color-inspired RPG (authentic GBC aesthetic, top-down perspective, native 160×144) set among remote North Atlantic fishing villages: fog, dark sea, weathered saltbox houses, rocky coasts. The mood is lonely, windswept, and melancholic, with horror-adjacent vibes.
I’m hiring a senior pixel artist to help define the game’s visual identity and build a small set of highly polished initial assets for a pitch video.
Inspiration: tall tales of the sea. Moby-Dick, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Fisherman, The North Water. Stories with a deep reverence, respect, and fear of the sea.
References: Dredge (tone, vibes), Robert Eggers’ films (desaturated colors, natural-light palettes), Widow’s Bay (gloomy/spooky coastal).
Core responsibilities
- Help define a distinct visual direction for the game, including a limited color palette
- Create a small, highly polished set of environments, characters, creatures, and key assets for a pitch video
- Strong potential to continue into full production; the finished game will need a large volume of assets
Qualifications
- Senior-level pixel art experience; limited-palette or Game Boy-style portfolio work is a big plus
- Skilled across environment/tile work, character sprites, and creature sprites at low resolutions
- Comfortable shaping art direction, not just executing a spec
Additional information
- Work-for-hire contract; paid art test for all artists who seem like a good fit
- Full project brief and list of deliverables provided after a signed NDA
- Please quote per-asset rates only, covering environment/tile work, character sprites, and creature sprites (the art direction phase will be scoped and quoted separately)
How to apply
Apply with your portfolio (limited-palette or Game Boy-style work especially welcome), your per-asset rates, and your availability.
